This project has evolved from month to month… lots of things have been learned, and like anything once you start to learn you realize how little you actually know… which is humbling but a true gift.
The first six frocks were created out of fabric that I found or was gifted to me… the designs came from the fabric and whatever was inspiring me at the time. I tried to be varied in styles and skills used. It was amazingly fun and helped me to embrace my passion… I spent nearly a decade removed from the fashion industry and really civilization in general. I was bushed, and it was hard to get back to myself. I needed to gain confidence and meet people and share…
I am so in love with sewing and designing… and always have been. I knew that I was going to be a designer from a young age… I learned to sew when I was 11 because I figured I would need the skill to be able to take my piles of sketches and designs and turn them in to reality… Oh how I wish I still had that sketch of the rainbow dress with matching shoes and accessories ;) I do also have two young daughters that need to be fed, sheltered, and educated… and that takes money. So, I have gained the confidence and the realization that I need to return to my original training and love… Bridal and Special Occasion Gowns… So the next six months will be focussed on creating a small line of Specialty Gowns… I look forward to sharing this process with you.
Thank you for all your support so far!
This project is really about learning something new every day and raising the bar always…
I took the month of August off… well as much as a single mom can. I sat on the beach, I swam, I rode my bike… I thought about what I was going to do with the rest of my life… or at least the next year. And here’s what I decided…
I am going to make a {gown} every month for the next year… 12 gowns in all… A nice amount to have a little show and drink some champagne at the end of it. It’s also an opportunity to showcase my dressmaking skills and offer my services to brides and grads and anyone else who fancies a fancy frock.
There are some parameters…
~only locally available supplies (I do love the reLove)
~they have to be fabulous
~they have to challenge me… creatively and technically.
~I need to branch out and connect with other local creative types… photographers, artists, models, stylists, circus performers… et al.

wow! hey what about jewelry to match. i just stumble across this website via the lovely Andrea Bell.
I don’t have time to go indepth but I will be back to read more.
Hi Lara
Wow, love your idea and am wondering when did your year start and more importantly when does it end (when’s the party?) Love your frocks and feel your pain about the photos. I made a model of mine do a shoot outside in February after a huge snowfall. She was a trouper but she looked pretty pink in the pics and everything was rushed because I felt so bad for her. My education is in textile printing (dying, weaving, felting, etc.etc.)if you ever have an idea for collaboration.
Hi Lori,
The first dress was in October of 2010, which will make the last month September 2011… just in time for Nelson Fashion Week… ;)
Cute. I found this through Andrea’s sweet site too. I worked on a project with Andrea and Nicole years ago, and they were tons of fun and creativity! Enjoy the ride. I’ll be visiting often.
RE: Judy’s post above – if this is one of the ohsotalented twins that I know (and I do believe it is), I have been meaning to get ahold of them and get them in touch with you for jewelery additions for a while. I’ll seek them out on facebook and forward info if I can :)
I am so, so proud to be a part of this project. I’ve been involved in modeling in the area for a number of years and by now I have sworn to myself that I wouldn’t do anything else I wasn’t personally really enthusiastic about – I’m not interested in the ego stroking or attention so “here is a photo of me looking bored in clothes I hate but was paid to wear” is far from my MO.
This, on the other hand, I am deeply touched to be included in.
And you’ve inspired me to get back into sewing myself, for which I have a wee passion that has been too long untouched.
I can’t wait to see what else your creative mind and skilled hands come up with.
